A drug dealer who accidentally left a bag of cannabis worth £8500 on a train has been jailed for two years and four months.

Saikou Sanyang, 45, a father-of-five from Gambia, was arrested after a cleaner found his bag on the luggage rack of a London to Edinburgh train on December 3 last year.

The cleaner's supervisor alerted the British Transport Police who found Sanyang pacing up and down outside the train at Waverley Station in Edinburgh.

He then approached officers to ask for his bag, saying it contained Gambian food.

Appearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Sanyang admitted being in possession of the Class B drug.

Defence solicitor Paul Cannavan told the court his client had planned to move to Edinburgh to work as a forklift truck driver and was going to sell the drugs for money for his family.

He also confirmed Sanyang had previous drug convictions and his last court appearance at Croydon Crown Court led to him being jailed for five and a half years over cannabis worth £200,000.

Sheriff Nigel Morrison QC told Sanyang only a custodial sentence was appropriate for someone selling drugs.
