A passenger has been injured after a chimney was blown from a roof and smashed through a bus window.

The man had a lucky escape after being left with just scrapes and bruises following the incident in Edinburgh city centre at around 9.45am.

Masonry fell from a building in Nicolson Street and smashed through the window of a Lothian Buses service.

The passenger was slightly injured in the incident and was treated at the scene by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

South Bridge was closed between Chambers Street and Nicolson Square while affected buildings were assessed and made safe. It was reopened to traffic at 3.40pm.

Inspector Norman Towler, of Craigmillar Police Station, said: "The road has now completely reopened after all the relevant checks to buildings have been completed. We would like to thank the public for their patience."

A spokeswoman for Lothian Buses said: "One of our passengers has been hurt due to falling masonry but thankfully has received only minor injuries."
