A man sparked a security alert after boarding a flight from Dublin to Edinburgh.

Crew members on the Aer Lingus service raised the alarm at Dublin Airport on Sunday after a passenger gave them a note which said another person on the flight was armed with knives.

A specialist police team removed the man with the note from the plane before it departed for Edinburgh Airport.

A spokesman for the Garda said: "At approximately 6.30pm Garda were called to the scene of an incident on a plane at Dublin Airport. A male passenger in his 20s was removed from the plane by Garda and detained under the Mental Health Act, he has since been admitted to hospital.

"The flight proceeded to on its planned journey a short time later. There was no one injured during the incident."

A spokeswoman for Aer Lingus told STV News: "We can confirm there was a security incident at Dublin Airport on Sunday evening, February 7, on board Aer Lingus Regional flight EI 3258, operated by Stobart Air. The matter is being handled by Dublin Airport Police and An Garda Siochana. We have no further comment to make."
