A woman suffered facial injuries after she was assaulted when she stepped in to stop a gang arguing with a man on the street.

The victim and her friend were walking on Lochrin Terrace in Tollcross, Edinburgh, shortly after midnight on Sunday when they saw four men arguing with another man.

One of the women approached the group and challenged them but they continued to act aggressively.

A member of the gang then assaulted her before the men fled along Ponton Street. They were seen turning left on to Fountainbridge and were lost to sight along Gardner's Crescent.

The 31-year-old victim was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with facial injuries.

The suspect is described as a white man with a tanned complexion, 5ft 10in and aged 23 to 26. He had a stocky build and dark hair with shaved sides and was wearing a black or navy polo shirt and navy/blue jeans.

Another member of the group is described as white, 5ft 8in, with a heavy build. He was bald and had "sticking-out ears". He was wearing jeans, black long-sleeved jumper or polo shirt. All four men are described as having Glaswegian or west coast accents.

Detective constable John McShane said: "This was an extremely distressing incident for the victim and we're urging anyone who may have witnessed this attack, or recognises the descriptions of the men, to come forward."
