A motorist was assaulted by her front seat passenger while she was driving on a quiet  street.

The victim was driving on Stankards Road near the junction with Maclardy Court in Uphall, West Lothian, when the incident happened on Tuesday, shortly after midday.

Police said they were treating the assault, which took place in a red Ford Ka with black racing stripes around the middle, as a domestic case.

Officers are keen to trace two passers-by who are believed to have witnessed the assault and may even have heard the victim screaming.

The first witness is described as a white woman in her 50s, around 5ft 7in with a medium build and blonde/greyish shoulder length hair. The second witness was a white boy, around 15 to 16 years old, 5ft 7in , with a skinny build and short dark brown hair. The teenager was walking a small white dog at the time.

Detective constable Allan Herbert said: "We're appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to come forward, particularly the two witnesses mentioned.

"The red Ford Ka with black racing stripes is very distinctive and it's possible they may have heard a woman screaming from within the car."
