Major bakery chain Greggs has announced plans to close its Midlothian bakery, resulting in the loss of more than 100 jobs.

The firm said it was cutting up to 355 roles throughout the UK as part of a five-year, £100m restructuring plan.

Its bakery on Dryden Road, Loanhead, which currently employs 107 staff, is among three being closed nationwide.

Greggs chief executive Roger Whiteside said on Tuesday that the changes were part of a wider plan to expand the current number of shops from 1700 to 2000.

The company has 12 bakery sites but said that "unfortunately not all are suitable for long-term investment due to their location and size".

It will close the sites at Loanhead, Twickenham in London and Sleaford in Lincolnshire, while it will expand capacity at its nine remaining factories.

Mr Whiteside said: "We will be entering into consultation shortly to work with trade unions and employee representatives of those affected to refine and develop these proposals.

"This may result in a total of 355 roles becoming redundant. These are difficult changes that we believe are needed to support the long-term growth of the business; however our immediate priority is to work to minimise the negative impact on our people, many of whom have worked in these roles for a significant number of years."

The company plans to extend the Clydesmill bakery in Glasgow to create a "centre of excellence" in Scotland.

Greggs said further improvements to its sandwich range and the addition of free-range egg omelettes to its breakfast menu resulted in pre-tax profits rising 25.4% to £73 million in the year to January 2 compared to 12 months ago. Shares in the FTSE 250 jumped more than 13%.

The retail chain opened 122 new shops last year and closed 74, as the business reduces its high street presence and expands in retail parks and motorway service stations.

Mr Whiteside added: "In 2015 we delivered another excellent performance in the second year of our strategy to transform Greggs from a traditional bakery business into a modern, attractive food-on-the-go retailer."
