Police are stepping up patrols after objects were thrown at vehicles from a flyover on the Edinburgh city bypass.

There were no injuries in the incident in the early hours of Friday but "extensive" damage was caused to the windscreens and bodies of at least seven cars and lorries travelling on the A720.

Police Scotland received reports between 1.30am and 2am that objects were being thrown from the Baberton flyover.

Inspector Liz Duthie said: "This was completely reckless and showed a total disregard for the safety of travelling motorists.

"Officers attended at the time and utilised local and specialist resources to conduct searches in the area, however inquiries continue to trace the perpetrators.

"There will be an increase in high-visibility patrols in this area for the foreseeable future to deter any further incidents and we're asking anyone with information or who may have seen anyone in the area of the flyover around this time, to come forward."
