School pupils discovered a secret camera hidden in the ceiling of a leisure centre changing room.

Fourth-year teenagers from James Gillespie's High in Edinburgh had been changing following a PE lesson at the city's Meadowbank sports centre when they made the discovery.

It is understood one of the teenagers threw a shoe, which dislodged a panel in the ceiling of the dual-use changing rooms and revealed the camera.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed they had been called following the incident on Wednesday afternoon.

She said: "Police in Edinburgh were made aware of a suspicious camera within the Meadowbank Sports Centre changing room. Inquiries are ongoing."

A spokeswoman for Edinburgh Leisure, which runs the complex, said: "Police Scotland is investigating an incident which occurred yesterday and all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure an isolated incident.

"I am unable to discuss any of the specifics at this time while a Police Scotland investigation is under way."

A city council spokesman said that the local authority was assisting police with their inquiries.
