An Edinburgh school which was badly damaged during Storm Gertrude will be closed for repairs until the Easter holidays.

A wall partially collapsed at Oxgangs Primary in the south of the city as high winds battered Scotland in January.

Edinburgh City Council announced last week that it would carry out a number of structural surveys at schools in the wake of the storms.

It has now confirmed that Oxgangs will be closed as a "precaution" following further examination.

The school will close from Wednesday until April 11 to accommodate remedial works.

The local authority said it would put alternative arrangements in place for pupils from Thursday.

Parents will be given a further update about the situation on Wednesday afternoon.

Structural engineers were instructed to visit all 16 schools built through the city’s public-private partnership project around a decade ago after the damage at Oxgangs.

Councillor Paul Godzik, Education Convener, said: "By closing the school now it means the necessary works can be started immediately.

"The council will be providing alternative arrangements at other locations to ensure pupils’ education can continue until the start of the Easter holidays.

"I want to reassure parents this is a purely precautionary measure but I am sure everyone will agree that the health and safety of our pupils and staff is paramount."
