A man was rescued by the RNLI after becoming stranded on an island in the Firth of Forth.

The walker was suffering from mild hypothermia after getting cut off by the tide on Cramond Island near Edinburgh on Tuesday.

He had tried to wait for the tide to fall so he could cross the causeway back to land, but he was stuck for four hours.

He called the emergency service as temperatures dropped and the weather closed in at around 8pm.

The RNLI Queensferry lifeboat crew went out to the island, assisted by the South Queensferry Coastguard.

The man was taken to Granton Harbour where he was passed into the care of the ambulance service.

A spokesman for the RNLI said: "The casualty was taken to hospital suffering from mild hypothermia."
