Police are hunting a man who brandished a knife during the attempted robbery of a convenience store in Edinburgh.

The incident took place around 6pm on Sunday on Craigentinny Road, police said.

The suspect, in his twenties, approached the assistant at the shop counter and demanded money and cigarettes before presenting a knife.

Staff refused and the suspect left empty handed before running up Loganlea Road.

He is white, of a slim build and around 5ft 4in He was wearing a dark blue hooded jacket, dark bottoms tucked into black socks, dark coloured trainers which had a white logo at the top and orange or red soles. He was carrying a black cotton bag for life with a white logo on it.

Detective constable Kevin Walls said: "We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen this suspect or who has any information that can help us trace him.

"He may have left empty-handed but he did cause the shop workers fear and alarm when they were simply doing their job."
