A jogger has been treated in hospital after he was assaulted during a failed robbery in Edinburgh.

The 21-year-old man was running on a path by the Water of Leith at around 8.10am on Monday when he was struck to the head and fell to the ground.

The suspect then made an unsuccessful attempt to steal the victim's phone but after a brief struggle was forced to flee on foot towards Gorgie Road.

At the time of the attack the victim was running west between Gorgie Road and the allotments at the rear of Saughton Mill Carpets on Stenhouse Mill Lane.

The suspect is a white male between 17 and 20, around 5ft 10in to 6ft with an average to stocky build, short dark hair and a clean-shaven face.

He was wearing a dark hooded jumper with a large pocket at the front, dark tracksuit trousers with a single white stripe down the legs and white trainers.

Detective sergeant Robbie Wallace from Corstorphine Police Station said: "The victim suffered a painful cut to his head which required treatment at hospital. Though, thankfully, he wasn't seriously injured.

"We are actively looking to trace the suspect and anyone who recognises his description is urged to contact police immediately.

"I would also request that anyone who saw anything suspicious on the Water of Leith footpath between Gorgie Road and Stenhouse Mill Lane on Monday morning to get in touch."

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
