An eight-year-old boy has died after a crash involving a car and a lorry on the A92 in Fife.

A woman and a second child were seriously injured in the collision between the Ford Focus and an Iveco lorry on the Kirkcaldy-Glenrothes road at around 3pm on Monday.

The eight-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 36-year-old female driver of the car is in a critical condition at the Victoria Hospital.

A nine-year-old boy, who was also travelling in the Ford Focus, suffered serious injuries to his face and is being treated at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.

The driver of the lorry and a 36-year-old male passenger from the car were not injured during the collision, which took place north of the Redhouse roundabout.

The road was closed for several hours while roads collision investigators carried out inquiries.

Inspector Brenda Sinclair said: "Tragically this collision has resulted in the death of a young boy, while the driver and another child also sustained very serious injuries.

"We are still trying to establish exactly what happened and I would ask any motorists who were on the A92 on Monday afternoon and who witnessed this incident to contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone who with any further information relevant to this inquiry should also get in touch."
