Around 50 jobs are at risk at a cable manufacturing plant in Fife run by a global technology firm.

CommScope launched a month-long consultation process with its staff in Lochgelly on Monday as part of plans to partially close the site.

A total of 135 people are currently employed at the former Andrew Ltd factory at The Avenue.

It is understood around 50 employees are at risk as the firm considers proposals to cease its manufacturing operation.

A spokeswoman for the firm said: "CommScope informed employees at its Lochgelly facility on April 5 of the start of a consultation process regarding the potential discontinuation of manufacturing operations at the site.

"A decision about the changes being considered will not be made until the consultation process has been completed, which will take a minimum of 30 days."

CommScope, which builds and distributes communications infrastructure, has more than 30 manufacturing sites around the world.

In 2012, the American firm announced that it was investing £1m into a new production line at its plant.

The Lochgelly facility was chosen ahead of operations in the United States and China, and the investment was hailed for safeguarding 90 jobs.
