A major city centre attraction has closed the steps leading to its entrance due to safety concerns.

Bosses at the Dynamic Earth science centre and conference venue in Edinburgh launched a review after a guest tripped and fell last year.

The building, near the Scottish Parliament on Holyrood Road, has curved steps leading up to its entrance.

John Simpson, chief executive at Dynamic Earth, said the current design of the amphitheatre complied with planning regulations but he wanted to make the area "as safe as practicably possible".

The venue has submitted a planning application to install handrails on the steps.

Mr Simpson said: "The safety and security of our guests while on site is of paramount importance to the organisation. We are confident that the proposed works will be completed as soon as possible.

"In the intervening period management at Dynamic Earth have taken the decision to close the amphitheatre steps through the use of temporary barriers and to direct guests coming to the centre to enter via the ramp to the west of the site, or alternatively to access via the steps on the east side."
