A man has been taken to hospital after he was injured in a "violent and sustained attack" in Edinburgh.

The incident took place at around 2am on Saturday, May 7 near the Jet Garage on Restalrig Road.

The 28-year-old man was repeatedly assaulted by a man who had been walking behind him.

The victim was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with serious, but non life-threatening, injuries.

The suspect is described as a white man, in his early 20s, with a slim build.

He was wearing dark clothing and white trainers, and was last seen heading north on Restalrig Road.

DC Sheila Silvagni of Gayfield CID said: "This was a violent and sustained attack and we're appealing for anyone with information which can help with our investigation to come forward.

"We believe that there may have been a number of customers, including taxi drivers, at the garage who witnessed the assault and would appeal for them to get in touch.

"We'd also ask anyone who recognises the suspect's description, or saw a man matching this description in the area, to contact us."
