Life bans have been handed out to Hibernian FC fans involved in incidents during the pitch invasion at the end of the Scottish Cup final.

The football club launched an internal investigation following the match at Hampden Park on May 21.

Thousands of Hibs fans invaded the pitch in celebration of the side's 3-2 win.

Some Hibs fans were seen throwing punches at Rangers players following the final, while fighting also broke out when a group of Rangers fans got past stewards.

There were at least 2000 supporters on the pitch in total before mounted police separated the groups.

Officers are continuing an investigation into the incident, which has lead to more than ten arrests so far.

Hibernian FC announced on Tuesday that it had taken action against a number of supporters identified as being involved in incidents on the pitch.

Sanctions including life bans and indefinite bans have been imposed so far, and more are expected as the review continues.

The exact number of bans enforced so far has not been revealed by the club.

The club's chief executive Leeann Dempster said: "While Police Scotland will continue with their own inquiries, we will continue to review what happened and take the action we think appropriate to protect the club's good name.

"We will also cooperate fully with the independent commission established by the SFA.

"We have initiated contact with the supporters informing them of our decision. We will continue to identify and impose appropriate sanctions against others involved in unacceptable behaviour."
