A major rescue operation is under way at Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh after a walker fell down a cliff face.

Fire crews, police and ambulance services are in attendance after the incident at around 2.40pm on Wednesday.

The woman fell on the east side of the hill, above Dunsapie Loch. The extent of her injuries is not known at this stage.

Two rope rescue crews are at the scene trying to get a stretcher to the casualty.

A Coastguard helicopter arrived to assist their efforts at 4.20pm.

An eyewitness said that the woman had fallen from the summit to an "inaccessible" area of gorse.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Emergency services are currently in attendance at Arthur's Seat after a female fell approximately 20 metres down a cliff face.

"The incident was reported to police at around 2.40pm on Wednesday.

"A multi-agency rescue operation is now under way in order to reach the woman and assess her injuries.

"Motorists and members of the public are asked to avoid the area while rescuers attend the scene."
