A man was attacked and needed hospital treatment after a gang of up to six men broke into his home.

The "violent and unprovoked assault" took place on William Black Place in South Queensferry, Edinburgh, at about 3.40pm on Sunday.

The victim opened the door to the men before they attacked him, with at least one of them using a weapon.

The gang then ran outside and made off in a blue Vauxhall Astra VXR and a large black vehicle.

Paramedics were called and the man was taken to St John's Hospital in Livingston suffering from injuries to his head and body before being discharged.

Officers have now appealed for anyone with information on the attack to come forward, saying as many as six men were involved in the assault.

Detective constable Ross Nicol, who is based at Corstorphine police station, said: "This was a violent and unprovoked assault that left the victim with painful injuries that are fortunately not believed to be life-threatening.

"I'm satisfied this was an isolated incident and there is not thought to be any threat to other members of the community.

"Our enquiries are at an early stage, however, we understand the vehicles that the suspects used may have been in the area prior to the incident.

"I want to hear from anyone who saw these vehicles or who saw any suspicious behaviour.

"Those with information can contact police on 101 or alternatively information can be passed anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."

One of the suspects is described as white, between 5ft 8in and 6ft, in his 30s or 40s, with dark balding hair and a stocky build. He was clean shaven, had an Edinburgh accent and wore a blue hooded top.

Asecond suspect is said to be around 5ft 5in, of average build and was wearing a black buff or similar item covering the lower part of his face as well as a black leather jacket and denim jeans. He also spoke with an Edinburgh accent.

The remaining suspects are said to be white, in their 30, wearing motorbike-style clothing with black buffs or similar items partially covering their faces. All had Edinburgh accents.
