Parking charges will be enforced in Edinburgh on Sundays after councillors approved the proposals.

The restrictions will be put in place in zones 1-4 in the city between 12.30pm and 6.30pm on Sundays.

Edinburgh City Council's transport and environment committee rubber-stamped the plans on Tuesday after a move in March to extend parking controls to cover Sundays.

It hopes to bring in the new charges sometime between 2018 and 2019.

Transport convenor Lesley Hinds previously argued existing restrictions were "not fit for purpose".

In a report before the committee, it was argued restrictions introduced in the 1970s were no longer fit for purpose due to increased car ownership, longer shopping hours and Sunday trading.

The papers before the meeting also stated the roll-out of the charges would cost between £605,000-£688,000, while it would bring in an estimated annual income of £490,000 for pay and display payments - although no estimate for how much could be made from penalty charge notices was given.
