Residents were evacuated from their homes after a BMW crashed into a parked car and a block of flats.

The driver of the white BMW fled the scene after colliding with the stationary Peugeot and veering into the building on Methil High Street, Fife, on Monday night.

The road was cordoned off to enable emergency services to clear debris and carry out inquiries.

No one was injured in the incident but officers now want to hear from any witnesses.

A police spokesman said: "Police in Methil are investigating a hit-and-run that occurred near to the town's waterfront on Monday night.

"The incident happened at around 7.45pm when a BMW struck a Peugeot car, which was parked on the High Street, before colliding with a nearby block of flats.

"The driver fled the scene, however, officers are looking to trace him as quickly as possible and are following a positive line of inquiry.

"A number of local residents had to be evacuated from their homes while engineers assessed the damage to their building.

"Most have since returned, however, work to stabilise the structure is planned."
