A new low-cost air route has been launched between Edinburgh and Barcelona.

Norwegian Air launched the twice-weekly service from Edinburgh Airport on Wednesday.

The new route to the Spanish destination offers fares from £34.90 and will run on Wednesdays and Sundays.

The Catalan capital is Norwegian Air's sixth European route from Edinburgh Airport, while the airline is also considering new transatlantic flights to America.

Thomas Ramdahl, chief commercial officer at Norwegian said: "We have major expansions plans at Edinburgh as our affordable flights are continuing to be a huge draw for Scottish passengers.

"Last year was our busiest ever at the airport with over 200,000 passengers flying with us and now holidaymakers can combine city, sun and sand with Norwegian's new affordable flights to Barcelona."

Edinburgh Airport's chief executive Gordon Dewar said the airline was a "strong cultural fit" for the airport.

He said: "Edinburgh is one of the leading destinations in northern Europe and I am really confident that this new route will be very popular for business and tourism passengers in Barcelona and here in Scotland."
