A woman has died after a driver lost control of her car, overturned and struck a fence in the Borders on Friday.

Another woman was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh for treatment, where she is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

A silver Suzuki Ignis crashed on the B6350 near Kelso at around 4.15pm on Friday, June 17.

The car was travelling west and was close to Redden Farm when it lost control on a bend, turned over and collided with a fence.

A 47-year-old woman, who was sitting in the rear of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female driver and another two passengers, a man and a woman, were taken to Borders General Hospital but were not thought to have life-threatening injuries.

No other vehicles were involved in this accident.

The road was closed off for over six hours so a full collision investigation could be carried out.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the vehicle or the crash to get in touch immediately.

Sergeant Andy Gibb of the road policing unit based in Dalkeith said: "This is an extremely tragic incident and our thoughts are today with the family of the woman who sadly passed away.

"Our enquiries into this collision are ongoing as we look to establish the full set of circumstances.

"I would urge anyone who was travelling in the area and who remembers seeing the vehicle prior to the collision to please contact police on 101 if not already done."
