Smokers are being invited to "vote with their butts" to help keep the Grassmarket in Edinburgh tidy.

The novel yellow voting bins in the Grassmarket call on smokers to vote on various issues by putting their cigarette ends in the relevant box.

So far, people have been invited to vote on their favourite Trainspotting characters, whether they prefer TV shows Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad, and their views on Euro 2016.

The lighthearted questions have attracted attention on social media, with Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh among those who retweeted the question about his famous book.

The move is part of the wider Grassmarket Neat Streets scheme, launched earlier this year to clamp down on litter in the busy area.

Throughout June, black bins have been brightened up with colours to attract the attention of people at night.

Dark alleyways are also being covered in glow-in-the-dark eyes in a bid to prevent antisocial behaviour.

Neat Streets is a collaboration between the council, charities, businesses and the local community.

Carole Noble, operations director at Keep Scotland Beautiful said: "Smoking-related litter, whilst relatively small items, proves to be a big headache for those who have to clean them up.

"I hope that the Neat Streets cigarette ballot bins help to capture attention and motivate both visitors and residents to take action to dispose of their litter responsibly."

City council environment convener Lesley Hinds said: "We're delighted to be working with Keep Scotland Beautiful and partners on the Neat Streets campaign, which really builds on the local community's pride in the Grassmarket to make it a cleaner, more attractive place."
