A man is in a serious condition in hospital after two men attempted to murder him in a "violent and sustained attack".

The 57-year-old was attacked on Sighthill Avenue in Edinburgh on Tuesday at around 9.45pm.

He suffered "numerous injuries" after being set upon by the two men.

The victim is in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Police are looking to trace the two suspects as quickly as possible.

The first is described as a white man with a tanned complexion, around 40, 5ft 10in with a slim build.

He had grey curly hair, a grey goatee or moustache and was wearing dark jogging bottoms, a blue top with orange arms and using a walking stick.

The second suspect is described as a white man with a gaunt complexion, in his early to mid 30s, 6ft with a medium build.

He had dark hair and was wearing jeans and a blue padded jacket.

Detective sergeant Andrina Cunningham said: "This was a violent and sustained attack which we're currently treating as attempted murder.

"We'd urge anyone who may have seen this, or recognises the descriptions of the suspects, to get in touch as soon as possible.

"The two men were seen shortly beforehand talking to a woman on the grass near the junction with Calder Road, who we're also eager to speak to."
