The first ever koala joey to be born in the UK died at Edinburgh Zoo on Tuesday evening.

The zoo's veterinary team had been caring for three-year-old Yooranah throughout a "prolonged period of illness", but said nothing more could be done to save him.

Darren McGarry, Head of Living Collections at Edinburgh Zoo, said: "We're extremely sad to report that Yooranah, our three year old male koala, died yesterday evening following a period of illness.

"We would like to reassure all the people that had taken Yooranah to their hearts over the past three years that nothing more could have been done for this much loved koala.

"He received the very best medical care and animal husbandry. Yooranah will be greatly missed by all."

Yoonarah was born in May 2013, becoming the first ever joey to be born in the UK.
