An 82-year-old woman has died in hospital following a collision between two vehicles in the Scottish Borders.

A beige Nissan Micra collided with a blue Mercedes van on a stretch of the A708 Selkirk to Yarrowford road near Philiphaugh at around 12.45pm.

Both occupants of the van escaped uninjured but the driver of the Nissan was rushed to the Borders General Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Meanwhile, a 43-year-old motorcyclist sustained serious injuries during a collision with a car on the A707 Selkirk to Caddonfoot road near Linglie farm at roughly 11.20am on Saturday.

At the time of the accident he was riding a white Suzuki motorcycle, colliding with a black Fiat car.

He was taken to Borders General Hospital but was later transferred to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary due to the nature of his injuries.

The two female occupants of the Fiat were also taken to Borders General Hospital, but were later discharged.

Sergeant Neil Inglis of the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Galashiels said: "Tragically a woman has died following the collision near Philiphaugh.

"These were two serious but unrelated incidents which occurred within a short space of time and less than two miles apart.

"I would ask any members of the public who may have witnessed these collisions or these vehicles prior to the collisions to come forward if they have not already done so."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
