Millions of pounds worth of masterpieces have disappeared from art galleries and been replaced with forgeries for a new TV series.

Seven paintings by British artists have been removed from museums around the UK in a bid to see if the visitors can spot the imposters among the collections.

A fake will be hidden at the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh and others will be smuggled into museums and galleries in London, Cardiff, Manchester and Wirral.

Only the museum curators, the show's production team, and presenters Giles Coren and art historian Rose Balston will know which pictures are real and which have been replaced.

People who correctly identify the fakes will be in the running to take part in the series finale at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, when they will compete to win a specially-commissioned painting of their own.

Fake! The Great Masterpiece Challenge will be recorded during July and August and will air on Sky Arts in 2017.
