A man has been charged over homophobic abuse on a bus on the day of the Edinburgh Pride festival.

The incident took place on a bus in Edinburgh city centre on Saturday after thousands of people celebrated the event in the city.

Police Scotland confirmed a 63-year-old man has been arrested and charged and is expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on a later date.

Inspector David Robertson, based at West End police station, said: "We will not tolerate hate crime in any form and I can reassure the public that all reports passed to us will be thoroughly investigated.

"Edinburgh has diverse communities and there is no place for intolerance. I urge victims to always report hate crime so that we can tackle this unacceptable behaviour when it occurs.

"Likewise, anyone who has witnessed such incidents should contact us immediately on 101."
