A man suffered head injuries after being attacked at random by two teenagers in Edinburgh.

The 22-year-old was assaulted following a "verbal dispute" with a teenage boy after getting out of a taxi on Merchiston Avenue, Morningside, around 2am on Thursday.

He walked to nearby Church Hill Place where he was confronted by the same boy and a second youth, thought to be as young as 14.

The pair attacked him, leaving him with cuts to the back of his head which required hospital treatment.

Both are described as white, 14 to 16 years old, between 5ft 6in and 5ft 7in tall.

They both had skinny builds, blond hair and were wearing grey tracksuits.

Detective constable Mike Campbell said: "This appears to be a totally random confrontation and assault, which left the victim with a painful injury to the back of his head.

"Anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity in the Merchiston Avenue or Church Hill Place area during the early hours of Thursday morning is urged to contact police immediately.

"In addition, if anyone recognises the description of the suspects and can help us identify them, then please also get in touch."

Witnesses should call Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
