Edinburgh Airport has recorded the busiest June at a Scottish airport after serving nearly 1.2m passengers.

A total of 1,173,953 travellers passed through the terminal last month, representing a 6.8% increase on the same month last year.

International flights hiked from 621,814 passengers in June last year to 715,639, a rise of 15%.

The boost is believed to have stemmed from the introduction of new services from Edinburgh, including routes to Stuttgart, Copenhagen and Krakow.

Gordon Dewar, Edinburgh Airport's chief executive, said: "June's record breaking passenger numbers make this another great month at Edinburgh Airport.

"Our continual growth underlines the need for Edinburgh Airport to adapt so we can accommodate the ever increasing number of people wanting to fly in and out of Scotland's capital."

More than a million passengers have gone through the airport's doors in April, May and June this year, while last year the trend continued in July, August, September and October.

Mr Dewar said the growing numbers of travellers underlined the importance of its airspace change programme.

The airport is currently running a public consultation about potential changes to its flight paths.

A controversial trial of a new flight path was cut short two months early last October due to a large number of complaints about noise.
