A flight bound for Chicago was forced to make an emergency landing at Edinburgh Airport due to a fuel issue.

The United Airlines plane had taken off from Heathrow shortly before 8am but had to make the unplanned stop at around 9.40am on Tuesday.

It is understood the emergency landing was due to a suspected fuel issue.

The plane, which is believed to have around 250 passengers on board, is being inspected on Runway 24 at Edinburgh Airport.

The flight is expected to depart Edinburgh Airport for Chicago Airport at 11am on Tuesday.

An airport spokesman posted on Twitter: "A United Airlines flight 929 from London Heathrow bound for Chicago has landed safely at Edinburgh Airport.

"Passengers of all other flights should not be affected by this - it's business as usual at Edinburgh Airport."
