Budget airline EasyJet has pledged to investigate claims an elderly wheelchair user was "dumped" at a gate in Edinburgh Airport.

Another passenger took to social media to complain about the woman's treatment at the airport on Sunday evening.

Trish Mullen claimed the woman had been left alone at a gate at 6.45pm for a flight departing three hours later.

Ms Mullen said in her post that staff were rude when she approached them to ask why the woman had been left at the gate by herself.

"The young man was extremely rude and responded that our flight wasn't going from this gate anyhow as it was changing," she wrote.

She said when they were moved to another gate, she came across five other wheelchair users who were being pushed by members of staff and accompanied by family, while staff "blatantly ignored" the elderly woman when she showed them her passport.

Ms Mullen added: "Outrageous and you should be so, so ashamed."

A spokeswoman for EasyJet said a probe had been launched into Ms Mullen's claims.

She said: "EasyJet is very concerned to see this picture and is urgently taking this up with Edinburgh Airport and their special assistance provider Omni-serv.

"This is clearly not the customer service and care we expect to be provided to our passengers.

"As such we have immediately launched an investigation with Omni-serv to establish what happened and ensure it cannot happen again."

A representative from OmniServ, which is contracted to provide specialist assistance at the airport, said: "We are grateful that this has been brought to our attention.

"We are taking this matter seriously and investigating to find out exactly what happened here."

A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport said: "This is unacceptable; the security and well-being of all of our passengers is our number one priority and we are assisting easyJet and Omniserv in their investigation to get to the bottom of this to make sure it doesn't happen again."
