A man and a woman have been taken to hospital after being struck by a car in a hit-and-run in Edinburgh.

The pedestrians were hit by a green Ford Focus on Captain's Road in Gracemount shortly before 3pm on Thursday.

Firefighters had to free a woman who was trapped under the vehicle.

She was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where she is in a serious condition. The man was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services are at the scene and the road has been closed between Lasswade Road and Southhouse Crescent. Police are diverting local traffic and motorists are urged to be cautious.

It is understood police are pursuing a positive line of inquiry in connection with the crash.

A police spokesman said: "A 41-year-old male and a 42-year-old female were injured as a result of the collision and have been transferred to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where they are undergoing treatment.

"The road is currently closed between Lasswade Road and Southhouse Crescent and is not expected to reopen for several hours to allow collision investigation work to be carried out.

"Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact police immediately on 101 if not already done so."
