A woman has died and a man seriously injured following a road crash in Midlothian.

Emergency services were called out to the two-car collision at around 4.20pm on Friday involving a blue Ford Fiesta and a white Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Police said the 46-year-old woman driving the Ford died on impact during the crash on the A68 road south of Dalkeith.

Her next of kin has been informed.

Officers also confirmed the 62-year-old man was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he remains in a serious condition.

Sergeant Neil Inglis of the Road Policing Unit said: "Tragically, this collision has resulted in a woman losing her life and a man being seriously injured.

"We're working to establish the circumstances surrounding this and anyone who maybe able to help is urged to get in touch as soon as possible.

"If you witnessed this collision, or saw either car beforehand, please contact Police Scotland on 101 or make an anonymous report through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

The road remains closed from the Cousland junction to north of Pathhead while an investigation takes place into the cause of the incident.

Police Scotland say the road is "expected to remain closed for some time" and "local diversions are in place".
