An audience member was arrested for assault after allegedly "hurling abuse" during an Edinburgh Festival Fringe show on freedom of speech.

The woman was among the crowd at the event which featured two comedians, Rick Molland and Sully O'Sullivan, who were debating the issue on Saturday night.

Police said the 38-year-old, who is believed to be from New Zealand, was arrested at Espionage nightclub in Victoria Street at around 8.40pm after they were called out to a disturbance.

A spokesman said: "A 38-year-old woman was arrested in connection with three counts of assault, refusal to leave a licensed premises and failure to provide details when required.

"A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal and she will appear in court at a later date."

The show which was due to take place that evening featured comedians going head-to-head on whether freedom of speech should be protected of curbed.

Organisers for the Molland vs Sullivan: Freedom of Speech show said security had been called to remove the audience member for "hurling abuse" at the performers, before the police were contacted later.
