A camper who was crushed to death by a falling tree as he slept in Edinburgh was homeless, police have said.

The 45-year-old man was sleeping in a tent with another man by the Water of Leith in Dean Village when the large tree fell around 3.30am on Saturday.

It landed on their tent and the 45-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services were called.

On Monday, police said the man who died was originally from Glasgow but was homeless.

Inspector Neill Whiteside of Drylaw said: "This appears to be a tragic set of circumstances which have led to a man losing his life, and his next of kin have now been informed."

Forestry experts have confirmed the tree fell as a result of natural circumstances.

The other man in the tent, who is 35, suffered minor injuries.

Police said a report had been submitted to the procurator fiscal.
