Four teenagers have been charged with hate crimes after homophobic abuse was shouted at people attending an LGBT meeting at a church.

The meeting took place at Boghall Parish Church in Bathgate, West Lothian on Thursday last week.

Police said a number of teenagers confronted those who were attending the meeting and subjected them to homophobic abuse.

Two 14-year-olds and a 13-year-old were detained on Sunday and a 15-year-old was detained on Monday in connection with the incident.

All have been charged with hate crimes and will be referred to the Children's Reporter.

Sergeant John Fleming from Bathgate Police Station said: "Hate crime in any form will not be tolerated within West Lothian and whenever such incidents occur we will investigate them thoroughly to identify those responsible.
