The Kingdom of Fife is well known for its tourist attractions such as Deep Sea World, the golf at St Andrews and numerous castles and famous houses.

But one house in East Wemyss has erected interest among the neighbours and visitors with a giant cock in the front garden.

While his wife was holiday in Scarborough Jim Hughes took it upon himself to climb up a ladder and trim his 14ft cherry tree which was covered in ivy.

After just 30 minutes of cutting branches away with sheers and secateurs the grandfather had finished his masterpiece.

He then stuck pieces of red plastic on its head to make a beak and a comb (at the top of a chicken's head).

The 73-year-old was then surprised to see tourists stopping outside his home to take pictures of his cock, which he decided to call Jock.

He said: "Originally, it was an old cherry blossom tree.

"It got that big that I was worried it would be blown over and hit a car.

"The main trunk is from the cherry tree and ivy has grown up it. I cut it down and shaped it.

"I just shaped it like a cockerel and stuck pieces of plastic on top for a beak and a comb.

"It's at least 14ft tall so I had to use a ladder.

"It's in the front garden and looks out into the street.

"Since then, quite a few people have been stopping to take photographs."

Of course when Moira Hughes, also 73, arrived home she was somewhat surprised to see the cock in her front garden.

She said: "Well, I was away on holiday and when I came back it was like that.

"I know he was trying to make something but that was a surprise.

"People keep stopping to look at it. Quite a few have passed remarks and they think it's clever.

"I think we'll keep it. I don't really have a choice."

As well as becoming a hit with tourists over the summer, neighbours have come around to the idea of a 14ft male chicken crowing over their street.

One neighbour, Caroline Russel, did not know what to make of the bush at first once it emerged what Mr Hughes had been up to.

The 59-year-old said: "At first I wasn't too sure what Jim was doing.

"But then we discovered he was turning the tree into a cockerel. It's big, really big.

"It's lovely and brightens the place up a bit. It's at the front gate and looks down the street.

"Jim's a very cheery guy and people have been stopping to look at his cockerel.

"My grandson is only two and he think it's very funny.

"It will stay as long as Jim's here."
