Residents were evacuated after a fire broke out at an electrical substation near Edinburgh's Royal Mile.

Two fire crews were called to the scene at Ramsay Garden shortly before 5am on Monday after reports that a cable was alight.

Between 15 and 20 people were evacuated from neighbouring properties as a precaution.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "We have had to evacuate surrounding properties. We also think there may be a gas main that has ruptured externally."

Two fire engines were sent to the scene along with an incident support unit and police.

Firefighters stood down at around 7.45am and handed over to engineers from Scottish Gas and Scottish Power.
