An 87-year-old man was found on a footpath with facial injuries.

The circumstances of the incident between Straiton pond and Loanhead railway path in Midlothian on Wednesday evening are not known.

The man is now recovering at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed anything unusual in the area at around 6pm to get in touch.

Police sergeant Bryan Jones said: "This man sustained a painful injury and we are eager to establish the full circumstances of this incident.

"Anyone who was in the Straiton Pond area last night and saw anything relevant to our enquiries is asked to contact police immediately."
