Hibernian FC's oldest supporter has died at the age of 106, just months after watching his team lift the Scottish Cup.

Sam Martinez had waited almost a lifetime for Hibs to lift the trophy, which they duly did in May when an injury-time winner from David Gray sealed a 3-2 win over Rangers at Hampden.

It was the first time the club had won the trophy for 114 years.

Sam, who became a legend among the club's fans, died on Wednesday afternoon at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.

The club paid tribute to their oldest fan and said his memory would "march on".

A Hibs spokesperson said: "The club are deeply saddened to learn of Sam's passing.

"Sam was such a lovely person and touched us all with his character and commitment to the club.

"He persevered longer than anyone else to see Hibernian lift the Scottish Cup and we were delighted that he was able to attend the game in May.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. His memory marches on."

Sam arrived in Scotland in 1942 from British Honduras, modern day Belize, to help with the war effort.

He was engaged in forestry work near Ullapool, before coming to the capital to live and work as a cook at the British Honduras Hostel in York Place.

He then came across Hibs by complete accident.

Speaking to STV in 2013, Sam explained: "One Saturday afternoon, as a perfect stranger in Edinburgh, I took a walk down York Place towards the Playhouse.

"I saw this big crowd. Being a stranger, I was frightened, thinking it was a riot going on. I went back to my hostel because I was scared.

"The manager of the hostel said to me 'don't worry, those men are going to Easter Road to see football.

"I had not seen football for years. I followed the crowd and I got into the queue. A young fellow offered me a complimentary ticket.

"I said 'No I don't want it, I can pay my way', but another gentleman standing beside me said 'Take it, you are perfectly safe'.

"I sat in my seat and I asked a fellow which is which. He said 'the green is Hibs, the blue is Rangers'.

"I had a team back home in my own country - Astrans - who were green and white also. Green is my favourite colour."
