Motorists are being warned about "potentially disruptive" resurfacing works on the M9 on the outskirts of Edinburgh for around eight weeks.

Transport Scotland said drivers should avoid Newbridge if possible and take extra time if travelling to Edinburgh Airport during the repairs, which start on Monday.

The works will focus on a stretch of the motorway between the Almond river bridge and junction 1A, around half a mile north of the Newbridge roundabout.

A 40mph speed limit will be put in place for the duration of the project, while resurfacing will be carried out between 8pm and 6am and at weekends.

Bosses at the transport body described the project as "potentially disruptive" but said they would attempt to minimise delays.

Steven Brown, Transport Scotland's roads and infrastructure manager, said: "We have an inspection regime in place to monitor performance of the road.

"This has identified the need for essential repair work to the road surface. The repair work will be undertaken by the contractor at no cost to the public purse.

"Our advice to road users is to avoid the area if possible and consider using public transport or alternative road routes."

Mr Brown said drivers should plan ahead for their journey, adding: "I would strongly urge those heading to Edinburgh Airport to check ahead and allow sufficient time."
