A 26-year-old man has suffered a brutal assault by a gang outside a pub in Edinburgh.

The attack took place at around 2am on Saturday, when the man and a friend left the premises on Saughton Road North.

The victim was subsequently attacked by what police say was "a number of men". Police said the gang then escaped from the area in a vehicle.

The victim suffered several facial injuries and was taken the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.

He has since been transferred to St John's Hospital to undergo surgery for his injuries.

Officers are appealing for information, and would particularly like to speak to the driver of a dark vehicle which was temporarily parked outside Scotmid on Saughton Road North at around 1.40am.

Police believe the driver could have witnessed the attack, or may have seen the victim or suspects beforehand.

Detective constable Peter Stark of Corstorphine CID said: "This was a brutal attack, which has left the victim with severe facial injuries which require surgery.

"We are particularly keen to speak to the driver of the black-coloured vehicle that was seen in the area at the time of the attack.

"We would urge the driver, or anyone else who was in the area, to come forward and contact us immediately."
