A flooring firm has been fined after a worker suffered "life-changing" injuries in a fall at a construction site in Edinburgh.

Steven Stewart was working at Fort Kinnaird Retail Park in May 2014 when he tripped, dislodging an unsecured wooden panel and falling through the hole beneath.

Mr Stewart, a self-employed contractor with Technic Concrete Floors, fell 4.5m and landed on steel mesh.

He suffered a broken foot and serious injuries to his back.

The case was investigated by the Health and Safety Executive, which found no risk assessment had been carried out at the site.

It said if an assessment had been conducted, the "inadequately protected" hole would have been identified as a hazard leading to safety controls being implemented.

On Wednesday, Lancashire-based Technic was fined £3300 after admitting health and safety offences.

Gary Aitken, head of the Crown Office's health and safety division, said: "This was an accident that resulted in life-changing injuries that could have been avoided if the appropriate measures had been in place at the time.

"This incident could well have proved fatal and it has irrevocably changed Mr Stewart's life.

"Falls from height are usually the greatest single cause of death and serious injury to workers within the construction industry.

"Hopefully this prosecution will remind other employers that failure to fulfil their obligations can have terrible consequences and that they will be held to account for their failings."
