The team behind plans to transform the former BHS building on Princes Street into a restaurant, bar and shops have said it could create a "tourist attraction in its own right".

LaSalle Investment Management said the redevelopment of the landmark building would include a rooftop restaurant with some of the "best views in the world".

The property is made up of two buildings, one fronting Princes Street and the other fronting Rose Street covering 122,000sq ft of floor space.

An initial blueprint proposed retaining retail space on the ground floor, with the upper storeys of the B-listed Princes Street building  converted for hotel use and a restaurant and bar on the roof.

The investment firm hope to have the scheme completed by 2017.

The full proposals will be revealed at a public exhibition at the George Hotel on September 22.

Steve Spray of LaSalle Investment Management said: "The demise of BHS has been very sad to see but at Princes Street it has given us an opportunity to create something really excellent for Edinburgh; a new flagship store, hotel and restaurants including one at rooftop level with some of the best views in the world.

"Princes Street's star may have faded a little in recent years, but this investment would create new attractions for both residents and visitors to the city.

"The rooftop has the potential to deliver a world class restaurant that we think could become a new tourist attraction in its own right in the heart of the nation's capital."

Councillors area due to discuss an early report on the plans later this month.
