A teenage driver who caused the death of an Edinburgh nurse as he was being pursued by police has been cleared of stealing a car and attacking an officer.

Dylan Jenkin, 18, is serving a six-year sentence for killing mother Jill Pirrie, 33, on Old Dalkeith Road as she made her way home from the nearby Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in May.

At the time, he was on bail after being charged with stealing a car and throwing a blowtorch, a hammer and other items at a police car chasing him.

He was due to stand trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on those charges on Thursday, however it emerged that the crown had dropped the case against him.

A spokesman for the Crown Office said: ""It is the duty of the crown to keep cases under review and, after full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the case and taking into account the available admissible evidence, the procurator fiscal instructed that there should be no further proceedings."
