A man suffered head injuries after he was attacked while confronting a gang of youths about their behaviour.

The group were causing a disturbance at Birnies Court on Muirhouse View in Edinburgh on Tuesday at around 5pm.

When the 63-year-old tried to speak to them, one of the males punched him in the head, causing him to fall to the ground. He was taken to hospital with head injuries.

The suspect is described as a white male in his late teens or early 20s. He was 5ft 6in with long dark hair and wearing a bright green polo shirt and dark jogging bottoms.

Detective constable Gavin Howat said: "The victim sustained a painful injury to his head after being punched to the ground and we are actively pursuing a number of lines of inquiry to trace the male responsible.

"We would ask that anyone who was within the area and witnessed this incident to contact police immediately.

"In addition, anyone with any further information relevant to this assault should also get in touch."
