Two teenage girls have been injured in a hit and run in Edinburgh's Portobello area.

The girls, aged 16 and 17, were taken to hospital after being struck by a Volkswagen Golf on Inchview Terrace on Thursday evening.

The car was recovered nearby, however, the driver fled the scene and is still at large.

A police spokesman said: "Police in Edinburgh are investigating following a hit and run collision in Portobello.

"A Volkswagen Golf was involved in a collision with two female pedestrians during the incident, which happened around 5.40 p.m. on Thursday in Inchview Terrace.

"A 16-year-old sustained and arm injury, while a 17-year-old suffered an injury to her leg. Both were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where they continue to be treated.

"The vehicle was recovered a short time later and inquiries are ongoing to trace the driver and any other occupants.

"Anyone with information that can assist officers with their investigation is asked to contact police immediately."
