An easyJet flight bound for Hamburg declared a mid-air emergency shortly after taking off from Edinburgh Airport.

The plane took off at 12.40pm on Monday but was diverted to Newcastle Airport.

It landed safely at around 1.25pm and it is understood fire crews were on the runway on arrival.

The airline said the diversion was caused by a "technical issue".

The flight had been scheduled to arrive in Hamburg, Germany, at 3.30pm.

An easyJet spokeswoman said: "EasyJet can confirm that flight EZY6931 from Edinburgh to Hamburg on November 28 diverted to Newcastle as a precautionary measure only due to a technical issue.

"The aircraft landed safely and was met by emergency services in line with our procedures.

"The safety of its passengers and crew is easyJet's highest priority and easyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all manufacturers' guidelines. We apologise to passengers for the resulting delay."
